Everybody here has probably been using 22 or 23 in CVS for ages by now, but FWIW, GNU Emacs 22 has just (finally) been released.

ViewMail with smtpmail?

how sexy is this? a tribe for emacs. i can't believe i didn't think to look for it before. must be something about debugging an emacs thing that makes me think of digging up google's newsgroups and online support systems.

ANYwayz..... i'm having some trouble getting my emacs VM (which i've used for many years) to talk SMTP to my ISP's Authenticated SMTP server. is there anyone on here with experience in that realm? i'm getting a relay access denied error which i think has to do with not having the authentication get triggered properly, and i'm getting some compile errors when i try to use a more recent version of the code...

i can provide lots more details, but i didn't want to take the time to pull it all together if noone here is into that sort of thing....

Non-destructive word-wrap

I think this is a faq, but anyone know how to get a non-destructive wordwrap?

In a totally unrelated note, anyone using cvs emacs 22? I just compiled on a fresh fedora core 5 and got `out of pure space' warnings. I tweaked the const in the header file and recompiled and it went away, but i am wondering if there is a better solution.

But mainly question 1 above....

Problem With HTML-helper-mode

I've installed html-helper-mode under xemacs and I'm having a problem using it. I've put all of the right lines in my init.el file. I get the "html-helper" indicator on my modeline when I'm editing an html file. Here's my problem:

When I want to emphasize some text, I mark it, and then press C-u C-c C-s e. When I do that, I get the following error message:

Symbol's value as variable is void: mark-active

The documentation for html-helper-mode has given me no clues.

setting FG and BG colors

I installed RH9 recently and can't seem to switch emacs to white on black. I tried to do it through the menus, but only managed to switch the menus and not the main text. I used to just add a few lines to .Xdefaults, but that didn't seem to work for me this time. I know its probably simple but can someone tell me how?

Navigating Frames or screens, or whatever the hell you call them

When I get into emacs sometimes I like to work with 4 or 5 documents at once,

I can press C-X 2 to split top and bottom or C-X 3 to split left and right. I can press C-X o to skip between the windows, er frames, er screens. But what I want to be able to do is go from screen 1 to screen 6 without cycling through. Do any of you know how to do that?

indent document

i often open an perl, c, sgml, document and have to suffer with the document not being formatted to my liking (or not formated at all.

since i am opening a document into a mode with some formatting aids usually its usually enough to mash the downarrow and the tab key dozens of times.

is there a classic way of doing this already in existence? seems like 'indent document' would be something each mode would have.

Favorite obscure feature

What is your favorite obscure feature? I'm not asking for the most obscure feature you can find, I'm asking what little-known feature you use on a daily basis.

My favorite is dabbrev-expand, normally bound to Meta-/ , It can save me several percent of typed-in keystrokes, especially when programming using long descriptive identifiers. I believe it may be keeping my RSI to a dull roar... If you don't use it regularly you owe it to yourself to find out about it, and to try to use if tor one hour. You'll get hooked.

There are similar autocomplete features in many IDEs (JBuilder, J++), but none are as simple and dependable.

There was a vi tribe with 22 people, but no Emacs tribe. Shame on all you Emacs users that preceeded me on this site. Nevertheless, this tribe is now open for business. Feel free to join, regardless of whether you use GNU Emacs, XEmacs, or any of the multitude of lesser-known forks.
